► Attractions visited during the full-day tour include:
◆ Church Of St. John The Baptist (Xewkija)
Built between 1952 and 1979, this is one of Gozo’s most recognisable places of worship. Known as the Rotunda of Xewkija, this impressive church boasts the third-highest unsupported dome in the world. You will be able to take a lift to the roof of the Rotunda, from where you can enjoy 360° panoramic views of Gozo.
◆ Sanap Cliffs (Munxar)
Heading to the south of Gozo, we will stop at Sanap Cliffs on the outskirts of the village of Munxar. Not accessible by public transport or hop-on, hop-off buses, Sanap Cliffs is one of the highest points in Gozo. These impressive cliffs are a hidden gem and offer breath-taking views of Malta and Comino in the distance.
◆ Xlendi Bay & Cliffs (Xlendi)
A short drive away is Xlendi, one of the most charming and recognisable spots in Gozo. Xlendi is a beautiful seaside resort with a gorgeous small bay flanked by picturesque cliffs. The oldest free-standing coastal watchtower in Gozo, built by the Order of the Knights of St. John in the year 1650, is also located here. We stop to enjoy the spectacular scenery at the belvedere, overlooking the bay and the watchtower.
◆ Knight’s Washhouses (Fontana)
On our way uphill from Xlendi, we stop at the quaint village of Fontana. Here, we will be visiting a real hidden gem: two well-preserved public washhouses built by the Order of the Knights of St. John. Dug into the side of a cliff around a natural spring in the 16th century, these washhouses encompass a basic irrigation system that ensures the distribution of clean water. After centuries, they are still functional and serving their original purpose; in fact, occasionally, you can still see the locals washing their laundry here.
◆ The Citadel (Victoria)
Our next stop is Victoria, the capital city of Gozo. At the heart of the city lies a majestic site: the mediaeval fortress known locally as “Iċ-Ċittadella” (The Citadel). With its distinctive skyline and imposing military architecture, this ancient, fortified structure stands out as Gozo’s major landmark, a beacon visible from all over the island. The area has been inhabited since the Bronze Age, and the site now occupied by The Citadel is believed to have been the acropolis of the Punic-Roman city of Gaulos, or Glauconis Civitas. During the mediaeval period, the acropolis was converted into a castle, which served as a refuge for Gozo’s population. A suburb began to develop outside its walls by the 15th century, and this area now forms the historic core of Victoria.
◆ Basilica Of The National Shrine Of The Blessed Virgin Of Ta’ Pinu (Għarb)
Heading west on the outskirts of the village of Għarb, we stop at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Blessed Virgin of Ta’ Pinu, commonly referred to as “Il-Knisja tal-Mirakli” (The Miracle Church) or simply as “Ta’ Pinu”. This spectacular basilica is one of Gozo’s most iconic landmarks. Though the building, its interior, and its surroundings are truly beautiful, it is the stories surrounding the church that are the most fascinating. Within the shrine, you will find walls covered in letters, crutches, damaged helmets, etc. that were offered as testimony by people who believed to have been blessed with a miracle by the grace of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Ta’ Pinu.
◆ Xwejni Salt Pans (Żebbuġ/Marsalforn)
Heading north, we will enjoy a scenic route through the countryside that will take us to the Xwejni Salt Pans along the northern coast of the island. The salt pans are a transfixing landmark of vital importance, upholding an ancient trade and skill while harvesting one of Gozo’s important natural raw materials. Xwejni’s salt pans, chequerboard pattern, and shimmering mirrored reflective pools are always a dynamic sight to behold. Spanning several kilometres across Gozo’s northern coast, today they are divided between three salt farmers. Salt mining has been a tradition in Malta for centuries, and here you will find large clusters of salt pans. Hewn in the rocky coastline, these pans collect sea water during the colder and windier months of the year. While the water evaporates in the heat of the sun, the salt remains in these pans and is harvested by hand. The harvesting season stretches from April to August, with people hard at work twice weekly.
◆ Qbajjar & Marsalforn Bay (Marsalforn)
Qbajjar and Marsalforn are two small bays in the north of Gozo, very popular for their many seaside restaurants. While savouring the gorgeous views, here you will be enjoying a light traditional Gozitan lunch at one of the many eateries dotting the area. After lunch, we will be heading back to Mġarr Harbour for the continuation of our tour at sea (always subject to adequate sea and weather conditions).
◆ Comino Island
At the end of our Tuk-Tuk tour, if sea and weather conditions are adequate, we will board one of our private boats. The boat will take you on a mini cruise around the island of Comino, passing by the amazing crystal-clear cyan waters of the Blue Lagoon and stopping at the Crystal Lagoon for a swim stop of approximately 30 minutes (the swim stop is done during the summer season only). On our return sailing trip to Malta, we will also be passing by the beautiful Comino Sea Caves.
