These public basins developed in the 19th century are fed by the same source, which erupted, according to the legend Émilion in the 8th century in the Hermitage. Offering a real show for the whole village, the laundromats came to wash their laundry or rather rinse it.
The Fontaine du Roi, the largest of the two washhouses and the only one covered at the time, was reserved for laundries in rich neighborhoods, thus providing them with shelter in the event of bad weather.
The Fontaine de la Place, originally smaller and without a roof, was reserved for the drinking fountains of working-class neighborhoods, thus preventing the laundry water from mixing in the two neighborhoods.
These washhouses are now a pleasant flowery and refreshing stop in the alleys of the lower city.
