This is a guided tour of the Arc de Triomphe, providing the visitor with the history, background, and major events that took place at the Arch. For the casual visitor, the Arch is simply a tourist destination. But for the French nation, the Arch represents the collective memory of soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice of giving their lives for their country. It is a solemn place, with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame.

For the tourist, however, the Arc de Triomphe is a splendid monument. It is indeed monumental, in both size and decors, and it warrants a visit.
