Crowning a perpendicular cliff, Rao Jodha in 1459 AD founded the Mehrangarh fort. It houses a palace intricately adorned with long carved panels and latticed windows exquisitely wrought from red sandstone.
Jaswant Thada built in the memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh 2nd in 1899 AD; the imposing white marble memorial marks the site of a royal crematorium.
Built by Maharaja Umaid Singh (1929-1942), and named after him, Umaid Bhawan Palace is an exquisite palace, because of the local chitter sandstone used. It is a splendid example of Indo-Colonial art and deco style of the 30s.

The 5 km long majestic fort on 125 m high hill is one of the most impressive & formidable structures. Although invincible from the outside, the defence has four gates approached by winding road. Within the fort are some magnificent palaces with marvellously carved panels, latticed windows and evocative names.
These are the Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Sileh Khana & Daulat Khana. These Palaces house a fabulous collection of trappings of Indian royalty including a superb collection of palanquins, elephant howdahs, miniature paintings of various schools, musical instruments, costumes.

Mandore, located about 9 kms north of the main Jodhpur city, was once the capital of the kingdom of Marwar before Rao Jodha moved it to Mehrangarh and the newly founded city of Jodhpur. This proud village was home to a substantially large fort and township. After subsequently moving to Jodhpur and the declining importance of Mandore, it did not see the sort of progress as did Mehrangarh. So, all that remains today are some assorted buildings and the exquisite Mandore Garden.
