The Surin Islands are considered one of the top snorkelling locations in Thailand. Long broad and shallow coral reefs line the sheltered eastern coast provide perfect snorkelling opportunities. The Surin Islands Marine Park is home to an enormous range of flora and fauna on both land and sea.
The Surin Islands are populated only with a group of nomadic sea people “Mokens” who normally live in the Burmese Mergui Archipelago and you will visit them during this trip.
Following pick up from your Phuket hotel you will be driven north to Khao Lak. At Nam Kem Pier have a coffee and light snack in the Private Departure Lounge before departing out to see by about 7.30am. The first snorkelling stop will be a long stop at Ao Mae Yai. Ao Mae Yai is arguably the best known of all the bays of the Surin Islands due to the ideal snorkelling opportunities in crystal-clear water.
This will be followed by a visit to a Mokun Village. The Mokun people are an Austronesian people who live a semi-nomadic hunter-gatherer lifestyle heavily based on the sea. It has been estimated that there are only 2,000-3,000 Mokun living today and you will find it quite interesting here.
You will enjoy a nature walk at the very picturesque Ao Mai Ngam before having a Thai Buffet Lunch at the National Park Restaurant.
Following a period of leisure on the powdery sands of the beach you will be given the opportunity to do a little shark watching (January to April).
Finally, (away from the sharks!!), is a long snorkelling stop at either Ao Chong Kaad or Ao Suthep before returning back to the mainland. You should reach Nam Kem Pier at about 4.30pm. followed by the transfer back to Phuket.
