Baroque Spire of the Immaculate Conception is the most famous of the obelisks in Naples and is located in Piazza del Gesù Nuovo, practically in front of the church. The obelisk was erected in the thirteenth century by order of the Jesuits according to the design of Giuseppe Genuino. Its construction in the center of the square aroused the negative reactions of the Duke of Monteleone. He feared that the structure could collapse on the facade of his building in the event of an earthquake. The monument is covered with marble sculptures by Matteo Bottigliero and Mario Pagano.
