(SKU: LK76180200) You will be starting your tour from Kalpitiya Dutch Fort at 7 am, where you will be met by your guide. He will brief you on the history of Kalpitiya, especially during the Dutch Era. He will also tell you more about the unique geological features of the area, the marine lifeforms, the other wildlife and birdlife, and their behavior.
You will then be taken on a boat ride through the lagoon of the Puttalam region, northwest of the island. Bordering Wilpattu, the lagoon is broken up into three areas. There is the Kalpitiya Lagoon towards the west, the Dutch Bay Lagoon towards the north and the Puttlam lagoon to the east. The entire lagoon is a marine sanctuary with a number of diverse habitats ranging from flat coastal plains and vast sand dune beaches to mangrove swamps and elephants inhabited jungles. The lagoon is home to many rare species, including the last few remaining Pink Dolphins of Sri Lanka. You will be passing by the 14 islands that dot the entire lagoon (all three sections) and will be stopping at some of them.
Your tour will also pass through the Wilpattu National Park where you will get to see many flora and fauna. There is a slight chance that you may even catch a quick glimpse of a Sri Lankan Leopard. You will be able to visit historical sites and witness the swiftly changing landscape from the sandy beaches to the swampy mangrove forests, and from coastal plains to tropical jungles.
The area is famous for its large number of pelagic birds, waders and other bird species. So don’t forget to bring your binoculars and your cameras. A highlight of this trip is the giant Baobab tree, which towers over the surrounding vegetation. After viewing the ancient tree, your boat will be mooring. You will then enjoy a wonderful picnic lunch surrounded by the jungle.
After that, your boat will head to the drop-off point, where your chauffeur will meet you. Your Lagoon Safari will end at approximately 2:00 pm.
